Join us for an extraordinary Black Bears and Shorebirds Photography Workshop in the stunning landscapes of Tofino, British Columbia. This immersive experience offers photographers the chance to capture both the majestic black bears and the diverse shorebirds in their natural habitats.
In this workshop, participants will have the unique opportunity to photograph black bears foraging along the shoreline and the varied shorebirds that grace the coastal areas. With expert guidance, you’ll master the techniques needed to capture these magnificent creatures in their natural settings.
The workshop includes three days of black bear photography sessions aboard a boat, ensuring close and respectful encounters with these incredible animals. The remaining two days are dedicated to capturing the beauty and behavior of shorebirds. Additionally, if time allows during the bear days, we will also seize the opportunity to photograph shorebirds in the mornings or evenings.
Our small group size ensures personalized attention, allowing you to refine your skills and make the most of this unique photography experience. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer, this workshop promises to be a rewarding and enriching adventure.

We cannot predict how many black bears or shorebirds will be around. After researching the area we have declared this time of year to give our guests the best chance at getting the shots of black bears and shorebirds they’ve dreamed of. Having said that, wildlife is unpredictable and we cannot guarantee the animals behaviour

Tofino’s rugged coastline provides the perfect backdrop for photographing black bears as they forage along the intertidal zones. The area is also home to a diverse array of shorebirds, offering endless opportunities to capture their unique behaviors and interactions.
With its pristine beaches, temperate rainforests, and abundant wildlife, Tofino is a photographer’s paradise. Join us for an unforgettable journey into the heart of this wild and picturesque region.

Accommodation

Accommodation and meals are not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own lodging and meals, except for lunch, which we will have together during the workshop. We will provide a list of recommended hotels to stay at for this tour upon contacting us.

Transportation

Transportation is not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation, each day, there will be a meeting spot and time depending on the weather and recent sightings in the region.

Note:

We strongly recommend not booking a flight home on May 1st. Instead, schedule your departure for the following day or later. Unforeseen circumstances may prevent us from returning by the 5th. Allowing an extra day will ensure you have ample time to catch your flight without stress.

Daily Schedule

Day 1

  • Meet in Tofino.
  • Check into the hotel and grocery shopping.
  • Evening shorebird photography session if time allows.
  • Optional group dinner in town to discuss the shooting plan for the next few days.

Day 2-3

  • Morning shorebird photography sessions.
  • Late morning to evening black bear photography sessions from the boat.
  • Mid-afternoon optional in-class workshop
  • Evening shorebird photography sessions if time allows.

Day 4

  • Morning shorebird photography session.
  • Afternoon, say goodbyes and depart with smile and wild photos!

Our primary focus is your growth as a photographer. We are here not just as guides, but as dedicated instructors committed to enhancing your skills and ensuring a rewarding experience.

Throughout the workshop, expect personalized instruction tailored to your skill level and goals. Whether you’re a beginner eager to grasp the fundamentals or an experienced photographer seeking advanced techniques, Jared is here to assist you every step of the way.

Physical Requirements

This tour is designed for participants of all fitness levels. You’ll experience gentle walks along coastal areas for shorebird viewing and boat trips for black bear photography. The walking distances are moderate, ensuring comfort as you explore and photograph the wildlife and scenic landscapes. We recommend sturdy yet comfortable footwear, like walking shoes or hiking boots, to provide stability during the exploration. Participants should be able to manage their photography equipment for capturing unique moments of black bear activity and the natural beauty of the coastline.

Equipment Recommendations

Camera Equipment

  • Camera body (DSLR or Mirrorless)
  • Telephoto lenses: A telephoto lens no shorter than 400mm for close-ups of shorebirds. A
    shorter prime or fast zoom lens (70-200mm or 100-400mm) for creative shots.
  • A Tripod, tripod head, and lens plate
  • Rain cover for camera and lens
  • Camera cleaning kit ( air blower, microfibre cloth, etc.)
  • Spare batteries and memory cards
  • Laptop and hard drive for storing photos
Clothing
In early May, Tofino can experience a range of weather conditions, from cool temperatures to sudden rain showers. Dressing in layers is crucial to stay comfortable throughout the day..
  • Base Layer: Light, breathable long-sleeve shirt (merino wool)
  • Comfortable short-sleeve or long-sleeve shirt
  • Mid Layer: Lightweight fleece or polyester shirt
  • Down Jacket for extra insulation during colder periods
  • Outer Layer: Water-resistant jacket or windbreaker to protect against rain and wind (Highly
    recommend a warm rain jacket or poncho for this time of year)
  • Quick-dry hiking pants
  • Rain-resistant pants
  • Sunglasses and a brimmed hat
  • Sunscreen with high SPF
  • Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks (merino wool)
  • Closed-toe shoes with a non-slip sole
  • Light scarf or neck gaiter, toque or beanie
  • Yoga mat (for staying in the prone position on the ground for long periods of time)
