This three-day workshop is dedicated to capturing the striking and elusive Belted Kingfisher. Our workshop includes morning and afternoon photography sessions, with a midday break for lunch and an in-class workshop session. Evenings are left free for participants to explore Victoria at their leisure or relax. During the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to capture Belted Kingfishers in various behaviors, from perching and diving to feeding.

Our expert guides will teach you how to approach these birds without disturbing them, ensuring you can capture stunning images while respecting their natural habitat. About the Area

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is surrounded by diverse and scenic landscapes that are home to a rich array of wildlife, including the Belted Kingfisher. The surrounding area provides an ideal setting for photographing these dynamic birds, with its mix of coastal and freshwater habitats.

Participants will explore various discreet locations in the Victoria area, chosen for their excellent opportunities to observe and photograph Belted Kingfishers. The exact locations will be kept confidential to protect the natural habitats and ensure a unique experience for workshop attendees.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation and meals are not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own lodging and meals, appropriate breaks and time spent together will happen throughout the day.

Transportation

Transportation is not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation, each day, there will be a meeting spot and time depending on the weather and recent sightings in the region.

Physical Requirements

This workshop is designed for participants of all fitness levels. You’ll experience gentle walks through various natural habitats where Belted Kingfishers frequent. The walking distances are moderate, ensuring comfort as you explore and photograph these dynamic birds. We recommend sturdy yet comfortable footwear, like walking shoes or hiking boots, to provide stability during the exploration. Participants should be able to manage their photography equipment for capturing unique moments of Belted Kingfisher activity and the natural beauty of the Victoria area.

Equipment Recommendations

Camera Equipment
– Camera body (DSLR or Mirrorless)
– Telephoto lenses: A telephoto lens no shorter than 300mm for close-ups of Belted
Kingfishers. A shorter prime or fast zoom lens (70-200mm or 100-400mm) for creative shots.
– Other lenses: A macro lens (90-105mm range) for detailed shots.
– Tripod, tripod head, and lens plate
– Rain cover for camera and lens
– Camera cleaning kit (air blower, microfibre cloth, etc.)
– Spare batteries and memory cards
– Laptop and hard drive for storing photos

Clothing
In June, Victoria enjoys a mild climate, but it’s important to be prepared for varying weather conditions. Dressing in layers is recommended to stay comfortable throughout the day.

– Light, breathable long-sleeve shirt (merino wool or similar)
– Comfortable short-sleeve or long-sleeve shirt
– Lightweight fleece or polyester shirt
– Water-resistant jacket or windbreaker to protect against unexpected rain
– Quick-dry hiking pants
– Sunglasses and a brimmed hat
– Sunscreen with high SPF
– Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks (merino wool)
– Closed-toe shoes with a non-slip sole
