Join us for an extraordinary Orca Whales and Specialty Birds Photography Workshop in the breathtaking coastal waters of Victoria, British Columbia. This immersive experience gives photographers the chance to capture the power and grace of orca whales along with the unique bird species that call southern Vancouver Island home.

In this workshop, participants will have the unique opportunity to photograph orca whales surfacing and traveling through the Salish Sea, as well as specialty birds found along Victoria’s coastlines and nearby habitats. With expert guidance, you’ll learn the techniques needed to capture both the dramatic power of whales and the intricate details of birdlife in their natural settings.

The workshop includes four days of orca whale photography sessions aboard a boat, ensuring safe, respectful, and unforgettable encounters with these iconic marine mammals. The remaining time is dedicated to capturing the beauty and behavior of specialty birds around Victoria, from coastal shorelines to nearby wetlands. Additionally, if conditions allow during the whale days, we will also seize opportunities to photograph birdlife during the mornings or evenings.

Our small group size ensures personalized attention, giving you the chance to refine your skills and make the most of this one-of-a-kind photography experience. Whether you’re a beginner eager to learn or an experienced photographer looking to elevate your portfolio, this workshop promises to be a rewarding and inspiring adventure on the waters and shores of Victoria.

Victoria’s coastal waters and surrounding habitats are home to an incredible variety of specialty bird species, making it an ideal destination for bird photography. From tufted puffins and rhinoceros auklets offshore, to bald eagles, great blue herons, and pelagic cormorants along the coastline, these birds’ behaviors and interactions offer endless photographic opportunities.

Witness the striking beauty of seabirds in flight, perched along rocky outcrops, or diving for food in the nutrient-rich waters of the Salish Sea. Capture their vivid plumage, graceful movements, and the dramatic coastal scenery that provides the perfect backdrop.

We cannot predict how many orcas or birds will be present at any given time. Based on extensive research of the region, we have selected this season to give our guests the best chance at capturing the orcas and specialty birds they’ve dreamed of. However, wildlife is unpredictable, and we cannot guarantee animal presence or behavior.

Accommodation

Accommodation and meals are not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own lodging and meals, except for lunch, which we will have together during the workshop. We will provide a list of recommended hotels to stay at for this tour upon contacting us.

Transportation

Transportation is not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation, each day, there will be a meeting spot and time depending on the weather and recent sightings in the region.

Daily Schedule

Day 1

  • Meet in Victoria, BC (hotel check-in near the Inner Harbour).
  • Time for grocery shopping and settling in.
  • Evening specialty bird photography session along the shoreline or wetlands.
  • Optional group dinner downtown to review the photography plan and get to know fellow participants.

Day 2

  • Meet downtown for breakfast or coffee to talk camera setting for the day.
  • Morning/Midday orca whale photography session by boat in the Salish Sea, focusing on surface activity, pod interactions, and coastal backdrops.
  • Optional group late lunch downtown to review the first photos taken and get to know fellow participants.
  • Evening orca whale photography by boat, exploring different routes in the Salish Sea for new perspectives.

Day 3

  • Morning bird photography session at a local hotspot (e.g., rocky coastline, eagle perches, or heron rookeries).
  • Midday optional editing/review session.
  • Evening orca whale photography by boat, exploring different routes in the Salish Sea for new perspectives.

Day 4

  • Morning bird photography session at a local hotspot (e.g., rocky coastline, eagle perches, or heron rookeries).
  • Midday optional editing/review session.

Day 5

  • Final morning bird photography session at a nearby wetland or shoreline.
  • Afternoon: say goodbyes, depart with memories, new skills, and a portfolio of incredible whale and bird images!

Throughout the workshop, expect personalized instruction tailored to your skill level and goals. Whether you’re a beginner eager to grasp the fundamentals or an experienced photographer seeking advanced techniques, Jared is here to assist you every step of the way.

Physical Requirements

This tour is designed for participants of all fitness levels. You’ll experience gentle walks along coastal areas for shorebird viewing and boat trips for black bear photography. The walking distances are moderate, ensuring comfort as you explore and photograph the wildlife and scenic landscapes. We recommend sturdy yet comfortable footwear, like walking shoes or hiking boots, to provide stability during the exploration. Participants should be able to manage their photography equipment for capturing unique moments of black bear activity and the natural beauty of the coastline.

Equipment Recommendations

Camera Equipment

  • Camera body (DSLR or Mirrorless)
  • Telephoto lenses: A telephoto lens no shorter than 400mm for close-ups of shorebirds. A
    shorter prime or fast zoom lens (70-200mm or 100-400mm) for creative shots.
  • A Tripod, tripod head, and lens plate
  • Rain cover for camera and lens
  • Camera cleaning kit ( air blower, microfibre cloth, etc.)
  • Spare batteries and memory cards
  • Laptop and hard drive for storing photos
Clothing
In early May, Tofino can experience a range of weather conditions, from cool temperatures to sudden rain showers. Dressing in layers is crucial to stay comfortable throughout the day..
  • Base Layer: Light, breathable long-sleeve shirt (merino wool)
  • Comfortable short-sleeve or long-sleeve shirt
  • Mid Layer: Lightweight fleece or polyester shirt
  • Down Jacket for extra insulation during colder periods
  • Outer Layer: Water-resistant jacket or windbreaker to protect against rain and wind (Highly
    recommend a warm rain jacket or poncho for this time of year)
  • Quick-dry hiking pants
  • Rain-resistant pants
  • Sunglasses and a brimmed hat
  • Sunscreen with high SPF
  • Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks (merino wool)
  • Closed-toe shoes with a non-slip sole
  • Light scarf or neck gaiter, toque or beanie
  • Yoga mat (for staying in the prone position on the ground for long periods of time)
