Join me for a private bird photography tour in Victoria, where we’ll explore the incredible diversity of birdlife in the greater Victoria area. Designed for photographers of all levels, this personalized experience gives you the opportunity to photograph a wide range of species, including vibrant Wood Ducks, Harlequin Ducks, Buffleheads, and Hooded Mergansers; fast-moving Anna’s Hummingbirds, Varied Thrushes, and American Dippers; and coastal shorebirds like Black Oystercatchers, Black Turnstones, Surfbirds, and Dunlins. Throughout the tour, I’ll provide hands-on guidance, expert tips, and personalized instruction to help you refine your skills and capture stunning images of these birds in their natural habitats. Whether you’re looking to improve your bird photography technique or simply enjoy a one-on-one immersive experience in nature, this private tour is designed to inspire and elevate your photography.

  • $700.00 CAD per day (approximately $500.00 USD) + Travel and Accommodations when touring outside of Greater Victoria, BC
Cancellation policy:
– Full refund available for cancellations 30 days or more before to the Tour.
– 50% refund for cancellation between 29 and 8 days before the Tour.
– No refund for cancellation 7 days or less prior to the Tour.

Subject Spotlight: Bird Species

During the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of bird species, as always, depending on the time of year and recent sightings:

Waterfowl:

– Wood Duck
– Harlequin Duck
– Bufflehead
– Hooded Merganser

Birds:
– Anna’s Hummingbird
– Varied Thrush
– Ruby-crowned Kinglet
– Gold-crowned Kinglet
– Bald Eagle

Shorebirds:

– Great Blue Heron

Jared will teach you how to approach these birds without disturbing them, ensuring you can capture stunning images while respecting their natural habitat. With personalized instruction and hands-on guidance, you’ll learn the best techniques to freeze their rapid movements and highlight their unique features.

About the Area

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is surrounded by diverse landscapes that are home to a rich array of bird species. The greater Victoria area offers excellent opportunities for bird photography, with its mix of coastal, freshwater, and forested habitats.

Transportation

Transportation is not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation, each day, there will be a meeting spot and time depending on the weather and recent sightings in the region.

Daily Schedule

Each day we will travel to an area, based on the participants desired species and any photography skills you are looking to learn.

  • Morning photography session focused on various bird species.

  • Lunch break.

  • Afternoon photography session focused on various bird species.

  • Evenings are free for participants to explore Victoria or relax.

Throughout the workshop, expect personalized instruction tailored to your skill level and goals. Whether you’re a beginner eager to grasp the fundamentals or an experienced photographer seeking advanced techniques, Jared is here to assist you every step of the way.

Physical Requirements

This workshop is designed for participants of all fitness levels. You’ll experience gentle walks through various natural habitats where birds frequent. The walking distances are moderate, ensuring comfort as you explore and photograph these dynamic birds. We recommend sturdy yet comfortable footwear, like walking shoes or hiking boots, to provide stability during the exploration. Participants should be able to manage their photography equipment for capturing unique moments of bird activity and the natural beauty of the Victoria area.

Equipment Recommendations

Camera Equipment

  • Camera body (DSLR or Mirrorless)
  • Telephoto lenses: A telephoto lens no shorter than 400mm for close-ups of hummingbirds. A
    shorter prime or fast zoom lens (70-200mm or 100-400mm) for creative shots.
  • A Tripod, tripod head, and lens plate
  • Rain cover for camera and lens
  • Camera cleaning kit ( air blower, microfibre cloth, etc.)
  • Spare batteries and memory cards
  • Laptop and hard drive for storing photos
Clothing
In March, Victoria can be chilly and rainy, so it’s important to be prepared for varying weather conditions. Dressing in layers is recommended to stay comfortable throughout the day.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket

  • Warm layers, including a fleece or insulated jacket

  • Long-sleeve shirts and thermal undershirts

  • Waterproof pants or quick-dry hiking pants

  • Waterproof, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots

  • Warm hat and gloves

  • Sunglasses and a brimmed hat

  • Sunscreen with high SPF

  • Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks (merino wool)

  • Umbrella or rain poncho
